The first performance is over so we asked PJ how it went.

‘I felt amazing performing – everyone was screaming, I want to feel that again and would like to carry on dancing. One of the main things I learnt was from Paul – treat others and yourself with respect. Dancing is hard work, it’s a lot more difficult than you think and it is tiring and keeps you fit.’

Luke interviews PJ and Leon just after the performance to ask them what they got out of the project and we get a sneak peak of ‘Elite’ in action -

His inspirations include The Boogaloo Crew, The Rock Steady Crew, Popin John, Project Korea, Pokeman Crew from France and too many more to mention.

He used to teach at the Custard Factory in Birmingham and has also taught in several Birmingham schools and worked with local community groups.

Watch 'Elite' perform their routine at the DPA Summer Festival in full.

Before the ‘Elite B-Boys’ performed onstage at the DPA Summer festival, Rachel Dickins, Assistant Head at Deansfield High School told us about what the project meant for her and the school. ‘We always try and provide as many different and exciting learning opportunities for our students. Being part of this project was a chance for the boys to break down any preconceived ideas about dance and to learn about the value of exploring something new. From day one there was huge interest, over forty boys attended the taster session. With help from Paul we selected 17 who we thought would get the most out of the project; these weren’t necessarily the ones who initially were the best dancers!

The boys were a group who weren’t used to working together, it was amazing to watch the relationships grow; they supported and encouraged each other in a very special way. Their dancing improved significantly the school was amazed when they saw them perform for the first time!
The boys achieved so very much, more than we could have imagined. They gathered a real fan base and went from not wanting to perform to ‘when can perform next miss’! They want to carry on dancing and we are trying to explore ways in which we can nurture their new skills and enthusiasm. On behalf of Deansfield a huge thank you for those people who helped make this wonderful project happen for us.’

Meet Luke and Adam the Wolverhampton creative team!

We asked Luke and Adam what they got out of being involved in the project -

When I heard about this project I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn something new. I have always been interested in filming and learning about technical equipment. It has made me think about different jobs that I could consider when I leave school. I learnt about how you have to be organised and communicate well with people.’ - Adam

I have always been interested in filmmaking and this seemed like an opportunity that I couldn’t afford to miss out on! Working alongside professionals was good and I leant an awful lot from them. It has made me think about how I can use these new skills in other projects in school.’ – Luke

‘Elite’, are a core group of 17 Year 9 boys from Deansfield High School. The boys worked intensively over 5 sessions with dance artists Paul Myrie and Stacey Lunn. They created a fantastic piece of street dance which they performed to pupils from the City Action Zone at the ‘Z Factor’ as part of their ‘Creativity Week’. Elite also performed at the DPA Summer Festival at Himley Hall. Before taking part in the Move It! project most of the boys had never danced before.

‘I really like playing with my Xbox, my favourite game is Gears of War I also love Kentucky Fried Chicken! I was keen to try the dancing as I have tried doing it by myself, I enjoy free styling. I learnt loads of new moves and it was brill doing it with the other lads, I made a lot of new friends. Performing feels great I really would recommend dancing to anyone and I plan to carry on dancing!’
